this is so belated
but i have so much love for bangkok
the land of smiles was golden
absolutely golden

bargain bin delight
seedy enchament
religious glory
and entralling hospitality
so mind blowingly incredible im afraid we can never get over this virginal experience
we are so coming back for more

i think any landscape in the world can be beautified by the unblemished human soul*

i pitied myself for years of unknowing endurance towards the ruthless dishonest and plain inconsiderate selfish sociology that envelops me
the thais showed that we dont all have to be this self-protective and distant
we can open our arms and air out our various malices
then heartily be friends and share some non superficial love
love that so transcends any linguistic boundary

zero knowledge of thai and a poor command of english didnt matter shit
cos the thais redefined hospitality for me
and i fear as the poor singaporean i am
(poor here does not weigh in financial terms but more on a moralistic scale)
i can never open my arms that wide enough

kickass hospitality =
1) engaging a driver to send us around and picking us up from the hotel and sending us back daily
2) using up one's only rest days from a hectic working life to accompany us everywhere
3) fighting to pay every meal (sometimes we win of course! but most of the times we cant match their stealth to slip waiters bills before we can intervene)
4)following us shopping at the sweltering chatuchak weekend market and every other shopping paradiso. like seriously, just waiting outside the shops while we od on retail smugness.
5)introducing us to like 200 ppl in our short stay. thais love to bring friends to dinner appointments so dont expect your date to arrive alone. they bring like erm 7 other ppl. they know how to party i tell ya and they like their whiskies.
6)basically there wasnt a moment cept bed time when ky and i had "alone" time. we didnt roam no bangkok streets without a wise local friend/guide by our side

our hosts khun chaiwat and miss orr were just fabulous fabulous people

bangkok 2007 in the making. i so feel it in my brittle bones.

sticking gold foil on the buddha. we were sincere devotees in bangkok. it was pure magical soaking up the beauty of buddhism in a place where religion transcends all classes and social roles.
